Caldwell County is located south of Austin, and is part of the Austin-San Marcos Metropolitan Area. Its 1996 population of 30,767 ranked 81st in the state. During the last four years of the decade, this area has been ranked in the top three fastest growing in the nation. The area has a long history of participation in early Texas. The area now Caldwell County was held by the Lipan-Apache, Comanche and Karankawa Indians who fought settlers vigorously to retain their hunting grounds along the numerous creeks that drain the region. Indian raids menaced settlers until after the Council House Battle and the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. This county lays claim to fame in that the Comanche Raid of 1840 was terminated here in the Battle of Plum Creek, which was re-enacted in the early 20th Century with much festivities. Caldwell County was created by an act of the State Legislature from parts of Gonzales and Bastrop Counties on March 6, 1848. The county received its name from the famous Indian fighter Matthew Caldwell, who was known and admired by the citizens of the prospective county. His nickname was Old Paint. Some important dates in county history: Caldwell County is located in south central Texas, just below the Balcones escarpment, with Lockhart, population 12,500, situated only 30 miles south of the state capitol. The city of Luling, population 4,800, sits at the southern tip of the county, fourteen miles to the south. The county covers 544 square miles or 348,160 acres. The San Marcos River and the Plum Creek are the major water drainage courses. Roughly, the shape of Caldwell County might be compared to a square which is balanced on one corner. In general, the topography of the county varies from broad flat prairies and gently undulating surfaces in the north and northwest to sand hill regions on the south and east. Two marked differences are found in the topography of Caldwell County. The first is the fact that in the northern part of the county lies Kaegler Hills, part of the Cunejeda Mountains, which parallel and are a part of the Balcones escarpment from southwest to northwest Texas. The second peculiarity is the presence of Iron Mountains, known locally as the Sand Hills, which lie in the southern part of the county and which do not seem to belong to any particular formation. Statistics from 1996 attributed the following to Caldwell County: The libraries of the City of Lockhart and the City of Luling are excellent resources for an in-depth study of the history of Caldwell County. |
